A high-quality steak in Buenos Aires is the price of a gourmet sandwich in Toronto. And it’s also the size of your head. (This is not an exaggeration, we held the plate up next to my face.)

La Cabrera (Cabrera 5099, Palermo Soho) is one of the most famous restaurants in BA, and for good reason. You’ll enjoy one of the most indulgent meals of your life, and it won’t cost more than $20 with wine. The meal starts with bread and a bud of roasted garlic in olive oil, but don’t fill up. In fact, don’t eat anything else that day.

The cuts of beef are both succulent and massive. The first visit I ordered a half portion (seen above) and could only eat a quarter of it. The second time I was smarter and shared a steak, but we still struggled to finish.

Included with your meal are a dizzying array of 13 side dishes. The white ramekins are brimming with beets, pumpkin mash, potatoes, hard-boiled quail eggs, a sweet mixture of garlic cloves and other things we didn’t recognize but happily ate. The vegetarian of our duo recommends ordering a courtesy salad, then making a meal out of the sides.

You’ll never enjoy a feast this good that costs so little. It’s a life-changing food experience that will haunt your dreams for years to come.

When we traveled to Buenos Aires, we encountered many unexpected things; a 35-minute cab ride that cost only $6, freshly grilled steak and wine from a shopping mall food court, a terrifying and equally humiliating pigeon attack, and unforgettable cocktails and food at a hip Scandinavian restaurant.

Located at Gorriti 5870 in Palermo, Olsen features soaring 12-metre ceilings, a sculptural fountain and an interior decorated in blond woods with clean lines. Our dear friends from Peppermelon suggested starting the meal with two shared appetizers of bite-sized Swedish-inspired sushi, and dense bagels and mini pancakes served with smoked salmon, herring and caviar (shown above).

We blame the unattractively dangling camera strap in that photo on the 60+ vodka cocktails on Olsen’s menu. Our favourite was the Pink Flamingo — a mix of Absolut Ruby Red, Cointreau, slices of cucumber and pink grapefruit — as seen at the very top of the this photo:

The mains included a goat-cheese salad with balsalmic reduction and melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi slathered in cream sauce, asparagus and smoked salmon. We can’t remember if we had dessert, but we do remember that our taste buds could not appreciate the highly popular drink of Fernet and Cola that we were forced to try. We thought it was kinda like licking a foot with a chaser of soap. Unexpected, indeed.

There’s no two ways about it — the food in Buenos Aires was heavenly. But after having our fair share of empanadas, steak and more steak, our taste buds were craving something a little different. At the end of our two weeks there, we searched out Sudestada (Guatemala 5602, Palermo Hollywood), the first Thai restaurant in the city. The minimal black and white decor is clean and crisp and the over-sized windows make for great people watching.

The best part about Sudestada isn’t the food, but the unique ordering experience. (Note: this applies to the lunch menu only.) Upon arrival, each person receives a paper menu. Simply decide which entrada (appetizer), plato principal (main) and bebida (drink) you’d like and use the hole punch to mark your selections. At 23 Argentinian pesos (about $6.30 US), it was a steal. However, if you drink too many cervezas and get a little hole-punch-happy, there’s no way you can blame the waitstaff for getting your order wrong.

A delicious Argentinian treat and a definite must. A submarino is a glass mug filled with piping hot milk and served with a chocolate bar on the side. The fun lies in the making. Simply unwrap the chocolate delight and sink the submarine. Stir until the chocolate has melted and presto, instant hot chocolate!
