With it’s large decaying metal doors and caged windows it’s no wonder I never gave this unassuming restaurant a second look. I’ve walked by Moto, a wedge-shaped, speak-easy style restaurant, for the past year and finally decided to go in. Whoa, was I in for a treat!

Upon opening the doors I was immediately surrounded by dim lighting, vintage recycled furniture, crumbling yellow walls and minimal seating all adding to a warm, cozy ambiance. Located beneath the rumbling elevated JMZ subway track in South Willliamsburg, this hidden gem offers an extensive menu at the fraction of the price compared to other establishments in the area.

We started off with a Whole Steamed Artichoke with Saffron Mayo ($7) which was cooked to perfection. The leaves were tender, juicy and meaty. A nice way to start off a light meal.

Sometimes you’re just in the mood for salad and that’s exactly what we ordered for our mains. The first dish contained marinated beets with smoked herring and sour cream with a few crispy saltine crackers. Plate presentation at Moto is beautiful, simple, yet rustic which is suiting to the rough luxe environment.

The second salad was even more simple and clean. A mountain of fresh sliced fennel with shaved parmesan, olive oil and vinegar.

And when salads don’t quite fill you up, then simply order the marinated mushrooms with capers & sherry vinegar ($4).

If you happen to find yourself in the area on a Saturday night, perhaps with a date, be sure to stop by Moto. The sweet and charming experience will definately work in your favor, if you know what I mean. Hey, we at Plato Putas strive to make sure our readers are well taken care of and will do our part to inform you to impress that significant other. Who said Valentine’s can’t come early.
