Brunch can be as much about the people as it is the food. Introducing Five Leaves, a restaurant located at the corner of Bedford and Lorimer in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It’s been reported that this Aussie, nautical-themed restaurant had a silent partner who was none other than Heath Ledger. Ledger died before the project was completed, but his father quickly jumped in to release the final funds knowing how much the restaurant meant to his son.

Brunch time at Five Leaves is eye candy at its finest, the place is busting with oodles of attractive locals! I suggest putting your name on the list, ordering a beverage from the sidewalk take-out window and enjoying the view until your seat becomes available.

One of my favorite go-to items on the brunch menu is the Fresh Sage Scrambled Organic Eggs sandwich with aged cheddar ($7). The whole thing is served on a soft, fluffy panino roll. The sage in this dish is wonderfully aromatic and woodsy but not at all overpowering.

We can’t feature all the mouth-watering brunch dishes at Five Leaves, but another item I can recommend is the House Made Gravelax with Herbs ($8.50). A heaping mound of delicious smoked salmon served with a side of dill-flavored cream cheese, capers, red onions and a sourdough roll. Combine the ingredients your way to form the perfect sandwich. Healthy and scrumptious.

Not in the mood for a breakfast sandwich? Try the Ricotta Pancakes ($12) or the House Made Baked Beans ($10). After brunching at Five Leaves stroll over to McCarren Park, located across the street, where the weekend farmer’s market is in full swing.
