We bumped into Toronto chef and restaurateur Mark McEwan at the opening of the Shops At Don Mills (Lawrence & Don Mills). He told us what he’d pick as his last meal on earth — the one main and dessert that would help him die a happy man. For those who don’t know, Mark has helmed the kitchen at North 44, Terra and Bymark, and hosts his own show “The Heat” on Food Network Canada.

He was previewing his new high-end grocery store, “McEwan,” which will open on June 15. Similar to Dean & Deluca, Mark’s store will be a 23,500-square-foot gourmet superstore with a prepared food counter that’s 68-feet long. Based on the sample plate he dished out, there’s little reason to ever cook again. We devoured the braised beef and mashed potatoes smothered in heavenly pepper butter. We even had to fight the urge to lick the plate clean.

Check back for a review of the store once it opens.

I scooted through the shops on the weekend. It’s a bit like a scene out of Pleasantville, no? Pretty, but I felt like I didn’t have the pedigree necessary to stay

Totally agree with the Pleasantville vibe. We went to check out the store Anthropologie – we were thrilled it’s finally arrived in Canada. But not so thrilled to discover we couldn’t really afford anything. Ah well, at least we could look. All in all, while it was a lovely day to walk around and enjoy the “outdoor mall” vibe, it was a little too posh for me. – Celine
